Jack Aubrey's favorite joke — movie version of Master and Commander notwithstanding, where he advises a blushing Maturin that he should always choose the lesser of two weevils — was his answer to the question, "Why do they call it 'the dog watch?'" The answer, of course, is that that two-hour watch is curtailed.

That's also what my run was this morning. I noticed midday yesterday that my left achilles had become sore, so I took care this morning to stretch it well. Nevertheless, I babied it out half a mile or so this morning and it was stiffening. I'm not sure what I did to it. There was no trauma, and the pain came up slowly later in the day, well after yesterday's run. I turned and came back home.

It may be my old shoes. I'm going to wear running shoes at work today, and keep it flexed, and see if that helps.

My intention had been the water tower route again. I am happy to report that I solved the problem of book chapters out of order. Turns out Ipod, in a typical computer goofup, puts chapters 10, 11, 12 and so on, ahead of chapters 1, 2, 3. And unfortunately, On the Road is split into sections, each with its own chapter numbers. In I-tunes, I was able to rename the offending chapters 9a, 9b, 9c, etc., and the chapters now are in proper order.

1; 6-1/2; 31-1/2; 31-1/2
