Elk in the snow
After three days of a relapse of my damn cold, I felt better Sunday and today, so I headed to the state land. There was a dusting — maybe an inch or two — of snow, but not enough to make footing bad. It was barely below freezing, so I stuck to the high pastures and was rewarded at the far end with a herd of about 50 elk. They are visible in this picture, and maybe a little more so (if you're viewing this on a computer, not on a phone) if you click on the picture, then click it again to zoom it up.
I got clear up to the pine tree at the right in this picture, but my phone died for some unknown reason and I couldn't resuscitate it. As a result, I didn't get any closer photos of the elk, even though they were within an easy stone's throw. I got the phone working again when I got back to the car by plugging it in to the car charger. No idea what killed it — I wasn't able to use my earbuds, either, so it was being flaky for no apparent reason.
Anyway, it was a beautiful morning, technical problems notwithstanding. Heard lots of geese near the river, and heard redwing blackbirds around Herrin Lake.
The sky was gorgeous. I shot this and a few others like it before I got to the elk. Felt good, thank goodness.
